چکیده :
Abstract- Verbal immediacy, which refers to the instructor's verbal behaviors aimed at reducing the psychological distance between the instructor and learners to foster a sense of togetherness, has a significant positive effect on key variables such as motivation, learning, and academic engagement. Given the importance of this concept, the present study examines the relationship between verbal immediacy and learners' cognitive engagement in online learning environments. Using a descriptive-analytical method of a correlational type, data were collected from 117 undergraduate students at Kharazmi University who had experienced at least one semester of online education. The results indicated a positive relationship between instructors' verbal immediacy and students' cognitive engagement. Additionally, regression analysis revealed that verbal immediacy significantly predicts cognitive engagement. Verbal immediacy behaviors, such as providing feedback, encouraging students, using humor, and addressing students by their first names, can create a friendly atmosphere and foster greater cognitive participation and engagement among learners
